Dr. Taghrid Asfar Awarded a $1,253,415 Grant to Develop and Test Waterpipe-Specific Health Warning Labels in Florida

Dr. Asfar and a team of health communication experts will work on a five-year project to adapt waterpipe health warning labels, specifically targeting youth in Florida. Waterpipe smoking – also known as hookah – has become a leading tobacco-use method across the United States, which may be fueled by the widespread misperception that it is not as harmful as cigarettes.

Dr. Andre Wilke Invited to Serve as Guest Editor for a Special Issue of Insects

Andre Wilke, Ph.D., a post-doctoral associate at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s Department of Public Health Sciences, has been invited to serve as Guest Editor for Insects – an international, peer-reviewed open-access journal of entomology that is published monthly by the Molecular Diversity Preservation International and Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI). Dr. Wilke will be responsible for handling papers for Vector-Borne Diseases in a Changing World, a special issue of Insects.

Dr. Hermes Florez Named Interim Chair of the Department of Public Health Sciences

Dr. Hermes Florez, professor and director of the Division of Epidemiology and Population Health, has been named interim chair of the Department of Public Health Sciences. He is a physician, public health expert, and scientist who is trained in internal medicine, endocrinology, and geriatrics, as well as in epidemiology. Dr. Florez also serves as the director of the Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center at the Miami Veterans Affairs Healthcare System.

Graduate Programs Lead Week of Welcome for New Students

Students attended an orientation where they learned more about graduate studies, met current students and faculty members at a networking social, learned more about student-run community service, academic, and networking events at a Public Health Student Association meeting, attended grand rounds, which focused on economic-based HIV prevention and treatment, participated in a University of Miami spirit day, as well as in a faculty and student networking lunch.

Annette Grotheer Named to Forbes ‘30 Under 30’ List for Program Addressing Health Disparities

Forbes recognizes 30 of the most promising game-changers under the age of 30 in 20 different industries from thousands of nominations every year. Grotheer, an M.D./M.P.H. candidate, founded The Shop Docs in 2016, which is a non-profit that brings health education and screenings to barbershops in African-American Neighborhoods.
