Online education is a complement to traditional residential programs, expanding access for working professionals, geographically dispersed students, and those balancing multiple responsibilities.

The goal is not to replace residential education, but to offer high-quality options that allow more students to pursue their educational and professional aspirations.

The development of the Online Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) program at the Miller School of Medicine was guided by a simple principle: flexibility should never come at the expense of quality. Effective online education requires intentional course design, active engagement, meaningful faculty interaction, and opportunities for collaboration. When built on these foundations, online learning can be every bit as rigorous, supportive, and transformative as traditional classroom experiences.

This year offered two meaningful reminders of what is possible through innovative online education. First, students in the Online M.P.H. program gathered for our inaugural in-person celebration after spending multiple semesters learning and collaborating virtually. The event highlighted the strong sense of community that can develop among students united by a shared commitment to public health.

Second, our online Biostatistics course received the Blackboard Exemplary Course Award, recognizing excellence in course design, student engagement, assessment, and learner support. This achievement reflects the dedication of faculty, instructional designers, and students who continue to demonstrate that innovation and academic rigor go hand in hand.

As public health education continues to adapt to the needs of an evolving workforce, both residential and online programs play vital roles in preparing future leaders. The success of the Online M.P.H. program demonstrates that expanding access and maintaining excellence are not competing goals. Through thoughtful design and a commitment to student success, innovative online education can work alongside traditional learning environments to strengthen the future of public health education.
