Increasing Quality, Reducing Costs

Why do we have the most expensive health system in the world, yet nearly 40 countries boast better health than ours? Health services research aims at changing our health system to improve efficiency and health quality while reducing cost. Health services research focuses on social factors, financing systems, organizational structures and processes, and provider and patient personal behaviors that affect access, quality and cost of health care.

Exporting Expertise to Mexico

Drug addiction is taking a terrible toll throughout Mexico. With help from the U.S., Mexico has opened three hundred new treatment programs. With a $1.2 million grant, health services researcher, Viviana Horigian, M.D., is exporting our Department’s clinical trials expertise to Mexico. Equipped with these tools, Mexican scientists will evaluate which treatments work best for individuals living in different locations throughout Mexico.
