Student with Healthcare and Law Focus Interns Remotely at Center for Disease Control and Prevention

Emely Sanchez, a rising third-year law student who received her Master’s in Public Health in the Miller School of Medicine's Department of Public Health Sciences in 2018, is spending her summer internship at the center of the pandemic universe. She is combining her law and healthcare background to intern at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention with their Public Health Law Program and their Center for Global Health’s Health System and Human Resources team.

“Although this year my internship is remote, I have had the opportunity to work on projects that are assisting the agency with different aspects of public health law and policy. This includes research and writing, policy analysis, and training & development — for issues both domestic and abroad,” Sanchez said.

Interest in Public Interest and Healthcare Law

The Miami native, already with undergraduate degrees in political science and criminal justice from Florida International University and a master’s in public health from the University of Miami, is laser focused on public health law and policy and research.

A HOPE Fellow, Sanchez is president of Miami Law’s Health Law Association and is the student liaison for the American Bar Association’s Health Law Section. She has served as a student liaison for their Public Health & Policy and Military & Veterans Heath Law interest groups within the Health Law Section.

With an interest in expanding her interest in public service, Sanchez has interned for Health and Human Services’ Office of Inspector General, the Center for Ethics and Public Service, and now twice at the CDC’s Public Health Law Program.

A Student Leader

An experienced student leader, she has worked with student government, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement Student Chapter, became the co-founder of the University of Miami’s Academy Health Chapter, reestablished Miami Law’s Health Law Association, and has worked on developing a graduate certificate program. She is also a member of the Public Interest Leadership Board, and the Society of Bar and Gavel

She has been an intern at the Health Rights clinic, the Office of Congresswoman Donna Shalala, and the Health Foundation of South Florida’s first public policy intern.

“As the student liaison for the ABA’s Health Law Section leadership for '20-21, I am hoping that there will be UM students in the coming weeks that applied for Interest Group liaison roles and that they also become involved with the section. Being involved with the ABA is a great way to network and explore different practice areas” said Sanchez.

Consulting Firm Focusing on Public Health Programming

“Because of these experiences and my other involvements outside of UM, I have decided to launch my own consulting firm, Sanchez Solutions LLC, that focuses on developing the quality and quantity of efficient public health programing, organizational movement & growth, and advances health equity.

“Also, as a summer HOPE Fellow, I recognize how my opportunity to strengthen my skills in this area and desire for public interest work have influenced my decision to pursue this opportunity.

“I see myself working in a variety of environments, even outside of consulting, concentrating on how to further program development and policy to promote a healthier world. My experiences at Miami Law have helped me realize the benefits of being both specialized in a certain area of law and also maintaining a range of interests. Miami Law’s interdisciplinary courses and extracurricular opportunities have helped me grow as a professional in my area while also building new skills as a leader and change agent for the public interest.”
