The University of Miami and American University are conducting a longitudinal cohort study to examine the extent to which a two-item screening instrument for underage alcohol use predicts problem drinking, alcohol abuse and dependence, and drug use and sexual risk behavior later in adolescence. The study is being conducted simultaneously in Miami-Dade County, Florida and in Prince George’s County, Maryland. The ultimate goal of this research is to set the stage for an intervention to train teachers and other school personnel to administer the screening instrument to students within the school setting. This project is led by Dr. Seth Schwartz, Associate Professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences.
