The spring 2021 issue of University of Miami Medicine, the Miller School’s magazine, has won a Gold Award in the Group on Institutional Advancement (GIA) Awards for Excellence competition sponsored by the Association of American Medical Colleges. The award was received in the Excellence in the Print and Digital Publishing – External Audience Periodicals category.

The GIA established the Awards for Excellence program to honor the exemplary work and contributions made in advancing medicine, research, and education in academic medical centers.

“The judges felt your entry was exceptional and warranted national recognition,” wrote Sharon White, director of Leadership Annual Giving at Duke Health Development and Alumni Affairs, and chair of the awards program, in the notification sent to the Miller School.

The spring 2021 issue had a cover story about “Healthy Aging,” with a series of reports detailing how researchers at the Miller School are learning how to improve both the quality and the extent of life. Other articles dealt with groundbreaking research into women’s cancers, the launch of the Miller School’s innovative NextGenMD curriculum, and a look back at the first year of COVID. There were also profiles of donors who made much of the Miller School’s important research and clinical treatments possible, as well as the contributions to medicine being made by the school’s alumni.

Judges' Commentary

Some of the illustrations in the digital issue featured motion, and that was one of the qualities that impressed the judges. Here are some of their comments:

“I enjoyed the animation and interactivity on the website — very engaging.”

“This is a novel concept to have the magazine in the virtual platform — an interesting way of presenting the information and an excellent demonstration of measuring the readership/impact of the piece.”

“Format, writing, narrative choices make this a compelling communication vehicle. Well done! I even sought out other editions. Keep up the good work!”
