Employee pushes limits, commits to DCC mission

Christopher Fitzmaurice, exercise physiologist at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, shares goal-shattering tips that have helped him fundraise for the Dolphins Challenge Cancer.

As an exercise physiologist at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, and graduate student in the Miller School of Medicine's Division of Prevention Science and Community Health, Christopher Fitzmaurice has witnessed the power of preeminent cancer care on a multitude of levels. Each day he helps others find strength in their journey through exercise and movement, and he knows that pushing boundaries can lead to great things.

In 2021, Fitzmaurice decided to push his limits in new ways—both physically and mentally—by participating in the Dolphins Challenge Cancer (DCC) 100-mile ride.

“I had never biked that type of distance in my life, but I was honestly more intimidated by the fundraising aspect of the event. I’ve never liked asking people for money,” he said.

But, DCC wasn’t the first time that Fitzmaurice focused on overcoming challenges. Diagnosed with autism at age 2, he missed every typical milestone throughout his childhood and spent years struggling to find his path until he discovered his love of exercise. Today, he continually seeks new ways to help others by sharing his passions, and his participation in DCC is of equal importance. “I sincerely believe in the mission and the impact of Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, so I decided to take things sky-high.”

In his first year of fundraising, Fitzmaurice raised $11,550 and completed the 100-mile route alongside University colleagues. “The ride itself was very impactful. There were moments when I realized that I was riding with brilliant people—doctors, researchers, leaders. But in the end, everyone is human, and we are participating because we believe in the same cause,” he said.

Fitzmaurice will be riding in DCC XII on Feb. 26, at Hard Rock Stadium. To help others reach their goals, he shared a list of fundraising tips.

  • Every single dollar counts to help you reach your goal. No donation is too small.
  • Don’t be afraid of “no”—it’s going to happen.
  • Say “thank you” to anyone who considers donating to, or learning about, your cause.
  • Use the technology features—such as text and email—on the DCC fundraising page to build relationships. Texting is an easy and effective way to reach more people.
  • Start with the people you know best and practice your fundraising skills.

Most importantly, Fitzmaurice encourages everyone to start somewhere and to have fun, even if hurdles arise. “I take great pride in being part of the University of Miami and DCC communities, and I am grateful to be a part of this incredibly rewarding experience,” he declared.
