Building Connections Beyond the Classroom

A familiar setting offered space for reflection, recognition, and renewed momentum.

Faculty, students, and families from the Division of Prevention Science came together at Bay 13 Brewery in Coral Gables to close out the academic year with conversation, community, and celebration.

Now in its third year, the annual end-of-year social offers a relaxed, family-friendly setting where M.S. and Ph.D. students connect with division faculty and “friends of prevention,” faculty from across the department who have supported students through thesis projects, dissertations, and mentoring.

“I think both students and faculty appreciate the opportunity to relax and connect in a fun, laid-back setting,” said Sara St. George, Ph.D., associate professor, and director of the Program in Prevention Science & Community Health. “It’s a great way to unwind at the end of the semester and let our students know how much we value them, their hard work, and their accomplishments.”

The gathering continues to serve as a space where academic mentorship and career development intersect. Alongside casual conversations and shared laughter, this year, even a few young family members running around, attendees had the chance to reflect on program progress, research opportunities, and future goals.

“This event is part of our strategic vision and mission,” said Mariano Kanamori, Ph.D., associate professor and director of the Division of Prevention Science and Community Health.

“It offers a valuable opportunity for department leadership to engage with students and faculty, gaining insight into the progress and needs of our M.S. and Ph.D. programs. It also serves as a platform to discuss future career paths for graduating students and to explore potential research collaborations among faculty within the division.”

Faculty attendees included Wendy Lichtenthal, Ph.D., FT, FAPOS, professor, and director of the Center for the Advancement of Bereavement Care at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, Edda Rodriguez, Ph.D., M.P.H., research assistant professor, Ariana Johnson, Ph.D., assistant professor, and Tyler Bartholomew, Ph.D., assistant professor.

The division’s emphasis on collaboration and community remains central to its growth. “Our goal is to foster an inclusive, collegial environment where everyone feels welcome, research ideas can be openly shared, and students are excited to learn and grow,” said Dr. Kanamori. “Events like this play a key role in encouraging current students to refer colleagues and friends to our programs.”

The social also serves to introduce new faculty, celebrate shared accomplishments, and express appreciation to those who mentor and support students throughout the year, including those who offer stipend support or serve on thesis and dissertation committees. These moments of recognition reflect the division’s broader commitment to academic excellence and mentorship.

As the Division of Prevention Science continues to expand its programs and research collaborations, events like this help strengthen the foundation of connection and innovation that defines its work.
