Epidemiology Graduates Mark Centennial Year with Academic and Career Milestones

Their dissertations are done, but their impact is just beginning.

This April, the University of Miami celebrated its 100th birthday, a milestone in academic leadership, research innovation, and student achievement. Among those earning advanced degrees during this centennial year were Ifedi Anikpo and Amrit Baral, who completed the Ph.D. in Epidemiology program in the Department of Public Health Sciences.

Their graduation reflects not only the successful completion of a rigorous academic program but also their preparation for high-impact careers in public health. Dr. Anikpo has accepted a position with Eli Lilly, where he will apply his epidemiologic expertise in the pharmaceutical sector.

Dr. Baral has begun a postdoctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins University, continuing his research at one of the nation’s leading public health institutions.

Both graduates made significant scholarly contributions throughout their time in the program, engaging in collaborative research and producing dissertation work that addressed key public health challenges. Their accomplishments are a reflection of their dedication, and the support of strong faculty mentorship.

WayWay Hlaing, Ph.D., professor, and director of the Ph.D. in Epidemiology Program, served as a mentor to both graduates and emphasized the importance of faculty engagement in shaping student success.

“Their guidance and support have been invaluable, and I am deeply grateful for their contribution to the success of Ifedi and Amrit,” said Dr. Hlaing, reflecting on the role of the dissertation committees.

Dr. Anikpo’s dissertation committee included Drs. Claudia Martinez, Tali Elfassy, and Yue Pan. Dr. Baral’s committee included Drs. Denise Vidot, Paulo Pinheiro, Yue Pan, and Albert Garcia-Romeu.

Dr. Hlaing noted that the graduates' accomplishments reflect their dedication, collaborative spirit, and commitment to public health. She expressed pride in celebrating their success as they move forward in their careers.

The centennial year provided a meaningful backdrop for honoring graduates like Dr. Anikpo and Dr. Baral, whose academic journeys reflect the department’s mission to prepare leaders in research, practice, and education. As the Ph.D. in Epidemiology program continues to grow, the accomplishments of its alumni speak to the quality of training and mentorship that define the student experience.
