Fall Orientation Sets the Stage for Public Health Impact

Fall orientation brought together incoming students in the Department of Public Health Sciences for a full day of introductions, resources, and community-building at the Don Soffer Clinical Research Center.

Students across the graduate programs entered with academic foundations in fields such as biochemistry, epidemiology, neuroscience, political science, and public health. The class includes first-generation graduates, Double ’Canes, and University of Miami employees, with representation from multiple states and countries.

Orientation activities introduced students to departmental resources and faculty while providing opportunities to connect with peers. A class profile presentation highlighted the group’s academic strengths, and interactive activities encouraged discussion of goals and expectations.

Admissions staff reflected on the importance of orientation as both the culmination of recruitment efforts and the beginning of students’ graduate journey. “It feels absolutely wonderful,” said Ginelle Solis, Ed.D., M.P.A., director of admissions and recruitment.

“Recruitment is not only something we do in the year leading up to orientation, but for some students, I’ve had the privilege of knowing them since their freshman year of college and supporting them throughout their journey to graduate education. This incoming cohort brings incredible dedication and has one of the strongest average GPAs we’ve seen in recent years. To work with them on their applications and now see them transition into graduate school has been a beautiful experience, and I am so excited to see all they will accomplish in our department.”

From an administrative perspective, orientation highlighted the department’s commitment to guiding students through every stage of their academic experience. “Orientation is always a special moment for our department. It’s inspiring to see new students begin their journey with so much energy and promise. I am proud of the commitment they’ve shown to public health and excited to support them as they grow into the next generation of leaders in the field,” said Margie Jimenez, M.A., CRA, assistant chair, and executive director.

Interim Department Chair Kathryn McCollister, Ph.D., encouraged students to explore the many areas of expertise within the department and to take advantage of its strong mentorship culture. “You will surely have wonderful mentors to choose from among our distinguished faculty members and we look forward to supporting your graduate school journey in every way possible,” she said.

Faculty also emphasized the challenges and opportunities awaiting students as they prepare to confront today’s public health issues.

“It was truly inspiring and exciting to welcome the incoming graduate students in public health to our Fall 2025 Orientation. Seeing these bright minds, ready to challenge and combat the urgent and complex problems we face today, filled me with immense pride and hope,” said Viviana E. Horigian, M.D., M.H.A., vice chair for education, and professor.

“Our new class is resilient, passionate, compassionate and committed. They are ready to lead change and make a significant impact in the field of public health. I am confident that they will rise to the occasion and drive forward meaningful progress,” she added.

As they begin their academic journey, the Fall 2025 students enter a department where interdisciplinary training, research opportunities, and mentorship prepare them to address complex health challenges and make meaningful contributions to the advancement of public health.
