Alyssa Lozano, Ph.D., M.S., a research assistant professor at the University of Miami, was recently elected Chair-Elect of the Society for Prevention Research’s (SPR) Early Career Preventionist Network (ECPN), a national leadership role focused on supporting the development and visibility of emerging prevention scientists.
Dr. Lozano’s involvement with SPR began in 2018, when she attended her first conference as a first-year master’s student in the Department of Public Health Sciences. Since then, ECPN has played a formative role in shaping her professional journey, connecting her to a national community of prevention scientists to inclusive, high-impact prevention science.
“As Chair-Elect, my priorities include expanding access to professional development opportunities, strengthening ECPN’s partnerships across SPR committees, and supporting meaningful engagement across career stages,” she said. “I am especially committed to ensuring our programming reflects the diverse backgrounds, disciplines, and lived experiences of our members.”
Dr. Lozano completed both her Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Prevention Science and Community Health at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Her graduate training in the Division of Prevention Science and Community Health provided the foundation for a career rooted in translational, equity-focused research. She credits faculty mentors for cultivating her passion for prevention science and encouraging her early engagement in the field.
Now a faculty member in the School of Nursing and Health Studies, Dr. Lozano focuses on the development and implementation of family-based interventions that address substance use, HIV, and mental health challenges among Hispanic adolescents. Her work continues to reflect the values instilled during her graduate training.
“This opportunity feels especially meaningful because it allows me to give back to the network that helped shape my career,” she said. “I am looking forward to collaborating with other early-career leaders to build inclusive spaces that support the next generation of prevention scientists.”
