Setting national standards for the most widely used clinical invasive device, a faculty member in the Department of Public Health Sciences has been appointed Editor-in-Chief of the U.S. Infusion Therapy Standards of Practice.
The document, published by the Infusion Nurses Society (INS), provides the foundation for infusion policies across U.S. healthcare systems and serves as an internationally recognized model for safe vascular access.
Dr. Rosenthal has led research initiatives across more than 45 countries.
Victor D. Rosenthal, M.D., Ph.D., research associate professor at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, officially took on the role of Editor-in-Chief of the U.S. Infusion Therapy Standards of Practice on April 1, 2025.
He also serves as the Director of the Master of Public Health and Master of Science in Public Health programs, where he continues to promote the intersection of public health education and clinical quality. His dual leadership illustrates a shared commitment to evidence-based standards and improved health outcomes.
In October 2024, Dr. Rosenthal was selected to join the U.S. Infusion Therapy Standards of Practice Committee, a 16-member panel of clinicians working in hospitals across the country. Within a month, he submitted several improvement proposals, all of which were adopted, leading to an invitation to apply for the top editorial position.
Spanning 290 pages, the Standards of Practice document organizes 65 standards into nine sections. It is based on a systematic review of over 50,000 scientific peer-reviewed publications, from which approximately 2,500 were selected. These standards are crucial for minimizing risks associated with vascular access devices, which are the most frequently used invasive medical devices in clinical care.
“Catheter-associated bloodstream infections significantly increase patient mortality, lengthen hospital stays, and cost more than $48,000 per case,” said Dr. Rosenthal. “The broader economic impact of healthcare-associated infections in the U.S. is estimated at $40 billion annually,” he added.
Widely recognized for his global leadership in infection prevention, Dr. Rosenthal is also the Founder and Chairman of the International Nosocomial Infection Control Consortium (INICC) and editor-in-chief of the Infection Prevention Guidelines for the International Society of Infectious Diseases.
Dr. Rosenthal’s appointment reflects more than three decades of selfless, altruistic work dedicated to protecting patients through research, standardization, and developing scalable solutions.
